Do I have to take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) to acquire a cross-bow?
No. There is no course requirement to acquire a cross-bow.
If I have taken the old CFSC before January 31, 1999, can I apply for a Possession and Acquisition License?
Yes. By successfully completing the CFSC course and/or tests between January 1, 1994, and January 31, 1999, you can apply for a Possession and Acquisition License.
If I have taken the old CFSC, will I have to take the new courses?
No. The old CFSC has been designated as a nationally acceptable course to allow an individual to apply for a Possession and Acquisition License.
What form do I use to apply for or renew my firearms license?
Go to the RCMP’s Canadian Firearm Program’s website to download the form or renew your license online.
What size does my photo need to be for the application and what information do I have to put on it?
You are not required to submit a passport-type photograph or a photograph that has been taken by a professional photographer. However, it is recommended since it must meet specific criteria.
How do I contact the Canadian Firearms Centre to ask about my application?
CANADA FIREARMS CENTRE Federal Licenses and Permits:
1-800-731-4000 or visit the Website
Can I take the restricted course first or take both of them together?
You are required to take the non-restricted course before you can take the restricted course. The courses are taught separately because each course is 8-10 hours. Not including testing.
What is the minimum age requirement to take the CFSC?
Under the Firearms Act, there is no minimum age requirement to take the CFSC. However, to obtain a minor’s license to borrow/use non-restricted firearms, an individual must be between 12 and 17 years of age. To obtain this license, you will have to successfully complete the CFSC and pass the tests unless:
- you have already taken the CFSC and passed the tests; or
- you are applying as a minor sustenance hunter in which case you are not required to take the course and pass the tests. This type of license has no minimum age. You should contact your Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) to see if you meet the requirements for a “sustenance hunter” in your province or territory.
All licenses will be subject to conditions, which may include supervision. You and/or your parent or a person who has custody of you will be interviewed by a firearms officer. Your parent or guardian must agree to the conditions under which you may use firearms and must give their consent before a minor’s license will be issued to you.
A minor’s license will not permit you to possess restricted or prohibited firearms or to acquire (buy, inherit, receive as a gift, or take in trade) firearms or crossbows. You must be 18 years of age or older to acquire firearms or crossbows.
If you have a minor’s permit now, you may continue to use it until it expires. Check with your CFO for local age requirements.
Your minor’s license will expire on the earlier of:
- the day you turn 18 years old; or
- the expiry date shown on your license.
